Black silicon carbide particles can be bonded together by sintering to form a very hard ceramic that is widely used in applications that require high durability, such as automotive brakes, automotive clutches and ceramic plates in bulletproof vests. Metallurgy grade silicon carbide is used in semiconductor electronic devices that operate at high temperatures or voltages, or both. Large single crystals of foundry grade silicon carbide can be grown by the Rayleigh method; they can be cut into gemstones called synthetic moissanite. Green silicon carbide with a high surface area can be produced from SiO2 contained in plant material.
