Metallurgy grade silicon carbide is used in semiconductor electronic devices that operate at high temperatures or voltages, or both. Large single crystals of foundry grade silicon carbide can be grown by the Rayleigh method; they can be cut into gemstones called synthetic moissanite. Green silicon carbide with a high surface area can be produced from SiO2 contained in plant material.
